Snow is defined as rain that falls when the air temperature is below zero degrees Centigrade. Each soil
patch keeps track of the amount of snow it has on its surface (called its "snow pack"). The
depth of the snow goes up when it snows, and goes down because of snowmelt. Snowmelt depends on the
temperature at the surface of the soil, which can vary because of different factors in the soil.
